Husband of Tanzanian President Samia passes away in Zanzibar hospital

Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Zanzibar. Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi confirmed the passing, stating that Ameir had been battling a heart condition.

Ndejembi announced that funeral arrangements are currently being organized in Kizimkazi, a village located on the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar. According to the vice-president, Ameir passed away at 08:00 local time on Monday at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital.

Ameir, an agricultural academic, was known for maintaining a remarkably low public profile and rarely appeared alongside the president at official functions. He became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman when his wife assumed office in 2021.

The couple married in 1978, before Samia entered national politics, and share four children, including a daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who serves as a politician in Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.

Vice-President Ndejembi led tributes to the late First Gentleman, conveying condolences to President Samia, their family, and friends. Regional leaders also expressed their sorrow. Kenyan President William Ruto described the loss on social media, noting that Tanzania had lost a distinguished son and the president a lifelong companion.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema also shared his sympathies, pledging that his nation stands side by side with the first family and all Tanzanians during this difficult period.
