Grindr will pay £26m to resolve a lawsuit brought by thousands of users in the UK who allege that the US-owned dating application shared highly sensitive personal information, including HIV status in certain instances, with advertising companies.
The settlement concludes a two-year legal dispute initiated by the UK law firm Austen Hays. The claim was filed at the High Court of England and Wales in April 2024, accusing Grindr of violating UK privacy laws during a period extending up to early 2020.
I switched to other apps years ago after hearing about the data leaks. Glad justice was served, eventually.
HIV status? That is deeply invasive. How can anyone trust this platform with their identity after this breach?
Wait, they settled before the case went to trial? I wonder if this admission of guilt will trigger more lawsuits globally.
Twenty-six million pounds! It is about time these apps faced real consequences for their data practices.
