AfD Landslide in Saxony-Anhalt Intensifies Pressure on German Government

In a result being hailed as one of the most consequential state elections in postwar Germany, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured a landslide victory in Saxony-Anhalt. The win places significant strain on the federal government led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who faces growing challenges from public dissatisfaction with the political establishment.

The AfD captured 43.8% of the vote, more than double the 17.2% obtained by the incumbent Christian Democratic Union (CDU). The CDU also leads the national coalition under Merz. With 39 of the 83 seats in the state parliament, the AfD fell just short of an outright majority, creating uncertainty over whether it can form a state government.

Traditionally, German parties have maintained a “firewall” to prevent cooperation with the far-right. However, AfD candidate Ulrich Siegmund stated that the party will pursue discussions with individual parliamentary groups and members to explore potential support for governance, according to Reuters.

Mujtaba Rahman, managing director for Europe at Eurasia Group, described the outcome as “extraordinary” and potentially the most significant German state-election result since World War II. While the AfD has seen steady growth in popularity, particularly in eastern Germany, this victory raises the possibility of the hard right holding state power for the first time since the Nazi era.

The party has promised strict anti-refugee and anti-migrant policies, including accelerated deportations, segregation of refugee children into separate classrooms, and incentives for small and medium-sized enterprises to adopt AI instead of hiring migrant workers. Additionally, the AfD plans to financially encourage families to have more children.

Rahman noted that voters seeking a radical break from the status quo supported the AfD, while liberal and left-wing voters shifted toward the Greens and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), further squeezing the CDU. Despite the political upheaval, bank Berenberg anticipates that the federal government’s pro-growth reforms and planned increases in defense and infrastructure spending will remain on track, though further AfD gains may challenge national policymaking.
