England have named former international batter Kevin Pietersen as a specialist mentor within their white-ball coaching structure, a move aimed at strengthening the squad ahead of the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
The 46-year-old, who played a pivotal role in England’s Ashes triumphs during his playing career, will begin his new responsibilities during the upcoming T20 and one-day series against Sri Lanka.
His involvement will extend across multiple tours and series, including winter assignments in Australia and South Africa, followed by home fixtures against Pakistan and New Zealand next summer. He will also accompany the team to the 50-over World Cup, which takes place later in the autumn across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
England’s white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum welcomed the appointment, praising Pietersen’s stature and contribution to the sport. “I’ve got immense respect for KP and what he’s achieved in the game,” McCullum said. “He’s had an amazing impact on English cricket, so for someone with his experience, knowledge and stature to want to play a role with this team is a fantastic result.”
Pietersen’s return to the England set-up marks a significant moment for the program, bringing together a wealth of top-level limited-overs experience as the team continues its preparation for the tournament on home soil of the southern hemisphere.
