Copper peptides have evolved from popular topical skincare serums into an injectable trend, raising concerns among medical professionals about the lack of clinical evidence supporting the practice. The compound, scientifically known as GHK-Copper or GHK-Cu, has gained significant traction on social media platforms, with users applying the electric-blue liquid to their faces or drawing it into syringes for self-administration.
Proponents claim the peptide delivers firm, wrinkle-free skin, promotes hair growth, and aids in tissue repair. This surge in interest reflects a broader wellness movement toward peptides for longevity and anti-aging, a topic that recently drew unprecedented attention during an FDA advisory panel hearing.
While topical copper peptide creams have been available for decades and studied in human trials for skin health, the shift toward subcutaneous injections—sometimes combined with other peptides—represents a new and largely uncharted territory. There are currently no published human studies confirming the safety or efficacy of injecting GHK-Cu. Furthermore, many individuals source these injectable formulations from online grey markets, compounding potential health risks.
Dr. Warren Ladiges, a professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine who has researched the peptide for years, acknowledged its potential benefits but urged caution. “I think GHK can have a major role in helping enhance longevity,” Ladiges said. “But injecting yourself without really knowing what it’s going to do? I wouldn’t do that to myself.”
The science behind GHK-Cu dates back to the early 1970s, when chemist Loren Pickart isolated the tripeptide after observing that bathing liver cells in plasma from younger adults revived them. Research subsequently established that GHK levels decline with age and found that the compound stimulates collagen production, triggers new blood vessel growth, and exhibits anti-inflammatory properties.
Existing controlled human studies have focused almost exclusively on dermatological applications, such as improving skin thickness, elasticity, and wound healing, often funded by the cosmetic industry. Dr. David Goldberg, director of cosmetic dermatology for the Schweiger Dermatology Group, noted that while the underlying science is solid, the leap to injectable use outpaces the available data.
