AfD falls short of majority in Saxony-Anhalt, leaving Merz to decide

Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured a victory in the state election in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday night, but failed to capture an outright majority in the regional parliament. The result has created uncertainty regarding the formation of a new government and what steps Chancellor Friedrich Merz may take in response.

In the aftermath of the projected win, Ulrich Siegmund, the AfD’s lead candidate, took to the social media platform X to thank Elon Musk for his backing. Siegmund praised Musk for his “clear and highly important perspective on the political developments of our time” and expressed a strong desire for “constructive cooperation.”

The German-language message from Siegmund followed an earlier comment from Musk, who posted “Well done!” directed at AfD co-founder Alice Weidel after she shared news of their electoral success.

  1. I’m surprised by the immediate gratitude to Elon. Did the AfD expect no backlash from such an explicit partnership?

  2. This Musk-AfD connection feels increasingly surreal. It’s not just funding; it’s public endorsement from a billionaire.
