Asian equities experienced a sharp sell-off on Tuesday after Broadcom Inc.’s chief executive compared speculative artificial intelligence investment to gambling at a casino, while Chinese memory chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) announced significant advancements in its new chip architecture.
The semiconductor sector bore the brunt of the decline. South Korea’s benchmark Kospi index plummeted by 6.25 percent as investors rapidly exited chip stocks. Other major regional markets also posted losses, with Japan’s Nikkei falling 1.8 percent and Taiwan’s exchange declining nearly 2 percent. Leading Taiwanese fab TSMC saw its shares drop by a similar margin.
The turbulent trading session highlights growing concerns over valuation risks in the AI sector, compounded by competitive developments from Chinese manufacturers. CXMT’s claim of progress on a new architecture added pressure to established players in the memory chip space, contributing to the broad-based retreat in technology stocks across the region.
Great timing selling my tech stocks before this news broke. Felt like I dodged a bullet.
Chinese memory chips advancing could reshape the entire supply chain. Scary for Western fabs.
6.25% drop in the Kospi is massive. I’m surprised the sell-off wasn’t worse.
Is CXMT’s progress a major threat to Samsung and SK Hynix, or just incremental?
Broadcom’s casino analogy really hit home. The AI hype feels detached from reality lately.
