England have announced their starting lineup for their Rugby League World Cup campaign, with Harry Smith selected to partner captain George Williams in the half-back positions. The decision leaves Hull KR’s Mikey Lewis on the sidelines for the opening match against Tonga.
Lewis, who narrowly edged out 2025 Super League Man of Steel Jake Connor to secure a place in the final squad, will not feature as a interchange option for Saturday’s fixture. Despite an inconsistent season, his performances were deemed sufficient by head coach Brian McDermott to include him among the three half-back candidates alongside Williams and Wigan’s Smith. However, Lewis joins Ben Currie and Ben Talty as non-playing reserves.
McDermott, who took over from Shaun Wane in April, has opted for Australia-born AJ Brimson at full-back ahead of Jack Welsby. Brimson, who earned his first England cap during last year’s Ashes series against Australia, is one of four heritage players selected. They include debutant Max King, who was born in Huddersfield to Australian father David; fellow newcomer Hugo Savala, part of the Sydney Roosters’ NRL Grand Final-winning side; and Victor Radley.
England face Tonga in Perth this Saturday, followed by matches against France on 24 October in the same city and Papua New Guinea on 30 October in Wollongong.
The men’s squad was unveiled on Tuesday, joining the women’s team announcement made by coach Stu Barrow. The England women will open their campaign against Wales in Perth, with Jasmin Strange and Connie Boyd making their debuts. Uncapped Hope Millard is named among the interchange players.
Both squads have now been finalized ahead of the tournament’s opening round of matches.
