‘Breaking Bad’ star RJ Mitte dies at 34

American actor and disability rights advocate RJ Mitte passed away on Monday at the age of 34. His management agency confirmed the news, describing him as a “beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate,” but provided no further details regarding the circumstances of his death.

Mitte is best known for his portrayal of Walter White Jr., the son of Bryan Cranston’s titular character, in the critically acclaimed series “Breaking Bad.” His character, who used crutches and had a speech impediment, became a central figure as the show progressed. The series, which aired from 2008 to 2013, won 16 Emmy Awards and is frequently cited by critics as one of the greatest television dramas ever produced.

Mitte brought a unique perspective to the role, drawing on his own lived experience with cerebral palsy. In a 2024 interview with the Associated Press, he reflected on how the real-life challenges associated with his condition—such as physical therapy, family dynamics, and high medical costs—prepared him for the emotional depth required by the part.

“You develop a different mentality and you develop a different look at how the world sees you and how you see the world,” Mitte said at the time. “You’re able to use that. And I think it’s an asset instead of something that would hinder.”

His management agency noted that Mitte “brought authenticity to the role and built a platform on disability awareness and inclusion.” Beyond his work on “Breaking Bad,” he appeared in television series such as “Switched at Birth” and “Guardians of Justice.” He also served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Hospitals for Children.

  1. Flynn’s character arc was heartbreaking to watch. It’s rare to see such authentic representation on screen without it feeling forced or pitying.

  2. Shocker that they didn’t release any details. Seems like standard PR damage control. Hopefully the family speaks out soon.

  3. His advocacy work was honestly more important than his acting career. He paved the way for so many other disabled actors in Hollywood.

  4. Wait, what happened? The article doesn’t say anything about the cause of death. That’s pretty vague and concerning for a major news outlet.

  5. I can’t believe he passed away so young. He was only 34? Breaking Bad really felt different because of his performance.
