RJ Mitte, the American actor widely recognized for his portrayal of Walter White Jr. in the critically acclaimed series Breaking Bad, has died at the age of 34. His representative confirmed the tragic news to the BBC, describing him as a beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate advocate for disability rights.
Mitte passed away in Brownsville, Texas. No immediate cause of death was released.
Living with cerebral palsy, Mitte drew upon his personal experiences to bring authenticity to his Emmy-winning role. For his performance, he shared a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2014. His representative, Sean Reilly, stated that Mitte built a significant platform for disability awareness and inclusion through his work.
Beyond acting, Mitte served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s. He also established The Mitte Foundation to support community initiatives and challenge stereotypes regarding people with disabilities.
Mitte grew up in Louisiana before moving to Los Angeles in 2005 to support his younger sister’s acting career. It was there that he landed his first audition for a California public service announcement against methamphetamine use. He later described Breaking Bad as an effective anti-meth narrative due to its consequences.
His character in the series was loosely based on creator Vince Gilligan’s late friend, who had a more severe form of cerebral palsy. While Mitte did not use forearm crutches in real life, he portrayed the character with honesty, often using humor while navigating a storyline where his health condition was rarely mentioned.
After achieving fame, Mitte actively sought diverse roles and pushed for more complex depictions of disability in media. In a 2021 interview with the BBC, he emphasized the importance of seeing projects that reflect diversity in both body and mind, noting that progress often comes in incremental moments.
His other television credits include appearances in Hannah Montana, Switched at Birth, and Westhampton. His most recent project, Talking to Strangers, was released earlier this year.
Breaking Bad, which aired on AMC from 2008 to 2013, received 58 Primetime Emmy nominations and won 16 awards, including Outstanding Drama Series twice. It is frequently cited as one of the finest television series of the 21st century.
Was it really just 34? That feels way too young. RIP to a talented man.
He was such a powerful advocate. His legacy in disability rights goes far beyond just acting.
I can’t believe he passed away so young. This is heartbreaking news for everyone who loved his work.
