British Cycling has confirmed that Matt Richardson will not compete in next week’s World Track Cycling Championships in Shanghai, following reports that he is the subject of a misconduct investigation.
The 27-year-old, who switched his international allegiance from Australia to Great Britain after the Paris 2024 Olympics, was originally named in the squad last Wednesday. He was considered a leading contender for medals in the team sprint, individual sprint, and keirin events.
In a brief statement, British Cycling verified Richardson’s removal from the team but declined to provide specific details regarding the circumstances. When contacted by BBC Sport about allegations first published by The Times, the organization stated it would not comment on an ongoing inquiry.
Richardson arrived in Britain with significant accolades, having secured two silver medals and a bronze during his tenure representing Australia at the Paris Games. However, his transition to GB cycling has faced hurdles; he previously missed his expected debut for England at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this past July due to a crash sustained during a keirin race in Japan.
The World Championships are scheduled to take place from October 14 to 18.
