Nobel Economics Prize Awarded to Hall and Woodford for Stabilizing Macroeconomics

U.S. economists Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford were named the joint recipients of the 2026 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel on Monday. The Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences honored the pair for establishing the microeconomic frameworks that underpin modern strategies for achieving macroeconomic stability.

The laureates share a 12 million Swedish kronor ($1.2 million) award. Hall, a Stanford University professor born in California, and Woodford, a Columbia University professor from Massachusetts, developed models that have become essential tools for central banks and governments worldwide.

John Hassler, chair of the Prize Committee, stated that the economists’ work ensures policymakers are better equipped to handle severe economic disruptions, such as energy crises or sudden shifts in household consumption patterns.

According to the Academy, Hall and Woodford moved beyond traditional analysis of aggregate variables like inflation and production. Instead, they demonstrated how forward-looking decisions made by individual businesses and households collectively influence the broader economy. Their research also highlighted the critical role of central bank and government communication in shaping public expectations and steering economic outcomes.

The Academy noted that based on these models, timely fiscal and monetary interventions can effectively dampen the peaks and troughs of the business cycle. It added that since their introduction, these frameworks have been instrumental in navigating recent economic downturns.

The economics prize is typically the final major Nobel award announced during the annual ceremony season, following recognitions in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. This year’s other laureates include Anne Carson, who received the Literature prize, and Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, who was awarded the Peace Prize for her contributions to international law and peacebuilding.
