North Korea launched multiple ballistic missiles into the sea off its eastern coast on Monday, according to South Korea’s military. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported that one of the projectiles traveled more than 900 kilometers (559 miles) from the Pyongyang region, though officials did not disclose the total number of missiles detected.
The launch has intensified tensions on the Korean Peninsula, where both nations have recently engaged in weapons testing. A JCS spokesperson identified the move as a direct response to South Korea’s own hypersonic missile test-fire. On Thursday, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung supervised the country’s first public test of a hypersonic missile, a rare occurrence for a sitting president. His office stated that once fully operational, the weapon would improve Seoul’s capacity to surprise-strike critical targets within the Korean Peninsula theater.
Japan’s Coast Guard confirmed the firing of two unidentified projectiles, believed to be ballistic missiles, which appeared to have already landed in the water. The South Korean presidential office condemned the launches as violations of United Nations Security Council resolutions and called for an immediate halt to such activities.
This incident follows a series of provocative actions, including North Korea’s October 3 test of a hypersonic intermediate-range missile designed to bypass missile defenses in South Korea and Japan. Additionally, tensions rose last week after a landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) injured three South Korean soldiers. A joint South Korean-UN investigation attributed the blast to North Korean forces planting mines approximately a year prior. Pyongyang has rejected these findings, accusing Seoul of provocation.
Despite previous overtures from Seoul to reopen dialogue, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un continues to advance his nuclear program while dismissing diplomatic efforts from Washington and Seoul. Diplomatic talks between Kim and former US President Donald Trump ceased abruptly in 2019, and Kim’s government maintains that any resumption of negotiations requires the US to abandon its
Kim Jong Un dismissing diplomacy again proves he has no interest in peace, only military leverage.
South Korea testing hypersonic missiles while North Korea launches ballistic ones feels like staring contests.
Over 900 kilometers range? That means Seoul is firmly in the crosshairs now. This is terrifying.
The cycle of provocation and retaliation is exhausting. When does this escalation actually stop?
