Iran to Establish Restricted Maritime Zone Near Strait of Hormuz

Iran has confirmed it will soon declare a restricted maritime zone encompassing the Strait of Hormuz and adjacent areas of the Persian Gulf. Mohsen Rezaei, Iran’s national security chief, stated that any ships entering the designated area would be subject to sanctions.

The announcement marks a significant escalation in tensions within one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints. The decision to enforce strict access controls suggests Tehran is preparing to assert greater authority over navigation in the region, raising concerns about potential disruptions to global oil shipments.

Rezaei emphasized that the restrictions would be formally announced shortly, signaling a shift from verbal threats to concrete regulatory measures aimed at controlling maritime traffic in the strategically vital waterway.
