House Minority Leader Jeffries Visits Battleground Districts, Claims Democrats ‘On the Verge’ of Taking Majority

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries voiced growing optimism about Democratic prospects for November, stating his party is “on the verge of taking back control” of the House during recent campaign stops in competitive suburban districts. The visits underscored the party’s focus on unseating Republican incumbents in areas that have historically presented challenges.

On Friday, Jeffries joined Democratic challenger Rebecca Bennett in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District. Bennett, a Navy veteran, is seeking to defeat Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. The following day, he traveled to Pennsylvania’s 1st Congressional District to support Bob Harvie, a Bucks County commissioner challenging Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick. Both districts are affluent, politically divided, and viewed as critical swing areas.

“We’re running through the finish line. We take nothing for granted, but we’re on the verge of taking back control of the House of Representatives,” Jeffries told reporters after the Pennsylvania event. He acknowledged that while confidence is high, the final seat count would depend on conditions in the coming weeks.

Fitzpatrick’s campaign responded to the visit by noting the lawmaker “still considers him a friend” and looks forward to future bipartisan cooperation. Fitzpatrick has cultivated a moderate image, recently distinguishing himself from President Trump by opposing tariffs on Canada, voting to restrict Iran war powers, and pushing back against the administration’s plan to purchase Russian diesel. However, Democrats have criticized him as a “rubber stamp” for Trump’s agenda, with local official Judi Reiss noting his lack of independence despite his crossover appeal.

Jeffries also identified other target seats in Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey, including the race in New York’s 17th District where Democrat Cait Conley challenges Rep. Mike Lawler. He further outlined plans to campaign in South Texas, arguing that Latino voters may return to the Democratic column due to concerns over the cost of living and immigration enforcement policies. He highlighted races in Texas, including Bobby Pulido’s challenge against Rep. Monica De La Cruz and Johnny Garcia’s bid against Republican nominee Carlos De La Cruz.

The Democratic leader dismissed predictions that newly drawn maps in Texas and Florida would yield significant Republican gains, asserting that Republicans would not win five seats in Texas or four in Florida. Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson is also targeting frontline districts, with plans to visit approximately 40 races this month as Republicans fight to maintain their single-digit majority.

If Democrats succeed, Jeffries would become the first Black speaker in U.S. history. While midterm elections traditionally favor the party out of power, financial disparities remain a factor; the Republican campaign committee held more cash on hand than its Democratic counterpart as of late August. Jeffries argued, however, that when combining candidate, committee, and outside spending, Democrats are effectively at parity.

  1. Texas map predictions seem bold. I’ve lived there two decades—those suburban shifts are real and lasting.
