Rumors suggest that Apple’s next-generation Apple TV will feature an integrated microphone, while its accompanying remote control will be equipped with a built-in speaker.
The addition of the internal mic would allow users to issue voice commands to the streaming device via Siri without needing to hold the remote or summon a HomePod. This functionality could also position the Apple TV as a basic smart home hub, enabling voice-controlled management of thermostats and door locks independent of the remote.
On the hardware side, the upgraded remote is expected to include audio capabilities designed to aid in retrieval. If the controller is misplaced, such as being kicked under a sofa or hidden by a child, the remote could emit a sound to guide the user to its location.
I’m unsure about Apple adding another always-listening mic into my living room. Convenient, but is it really necessary?
Finally, a remote that can find itself! That speaker feature is a game changer for my couch cushion graveyard.
