DHS Secretary Mullin Defends Livestream of Fort Hood Shooter’s Execution

WASHINGTON — Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin defended the Pentagon’s decision to broadcast the execution of Nidal Hasan on Sunday, stating he does not perceive an “elevated risk” to national security despite growing criticism. Hasan, a former Army major, was convicted for the 2009 massacre at Fort Hood that left 13 people dead.

Speaking on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan,” Mullin emphasized the administration’s stance on justice. “I think people need to understand, if you attack America, we will come after you and we will make sure that the punishment fits the crime,” Mullin said. He added that viewers are under no obligation to watch the broadcast, which is scheduled for December 3.

The plan, announced last week by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, marks the first military execution since 1961. It has drawn sharp rebuke from across the political spectrum, including Republicans such as Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Murkowski urged the Pentagon to rescind what she called a “gruesome decision,” arguing in a post on X that there is no justification for livestreaming any execution, including Hasan’s. She warned that the broadcast would inadvertently provide the shooter with the martyrdom he seeks.

Mullin expressed disregard for Hasan’s fate, stating, “I give absolutely zero thought to the way that this man dies.” He aligned his comments with President Donald Trump, praising the president’s leadership and asserting that he is restoring American values. “My job as secretary of homeland security is to protect the homeland, and that’s what we do,” Mullin said.

Tensions within the administration became apparent over the weekend. Vice President JD Vance cast doubt on the livestream during an interview on Friday, saying he would not watch it if it proceeds. While acknowledging that Hasan committed “the worst terrorist attack on American soil outside of 9/11,” Vance insisted that the method of execution should not overshadow the brutality of the crimes, which wounded more than 30 others.

President Trump addressed the controversy on Saturday, noting there are divided opinions on the matter. “There are two schools of thought on it,” Trump told reporters. “I’ll make a decision, ultimately.”
