Donald Trump has stated he is currently considering whether the United States should participate in Saudi Arabian airstrikes against Iran-backed Houthi forces. This potential escalation follows a deadly attack on Riyadh yesterday, which prompted the militant group to issue its first public statement since the incident.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree cautioned travelers and aviation companies against utilizing Saudi airports, describing the facilities and surrounding airspace as active theaters of operation exposed to targeting. The group declared its intention to respond to aggression with equivalent measures, stating, “airport for airport, siege for siege, and escalation for escalation.”
While the warning applied broadly to Saudi aviation hubs, Saree specifically excluded the airports serving Mecca and Medina from the threat, acknowledging their status as Islam’s holiest cities. The development marks a significant intensification of rhetoric and operational threats in the ongoing Middle East crisis.
This echoes the 1980s Red Sea crisis. We have seen this movie before with little resolution.
Scary stuff. I just hope no innocent civilians get caught in the crossfire of these posturing games.
Empty threats from a group that can barely hit a stationary target? I doubt this changes much.
Excluding Mecca and Medina shows they respect the religious sensitivity, even during escalation.
Avoiding Riyadh entirely. My flight to Jeddah is now a nightmare of uncertainty.
