Cappu Films Taps Generative AI for ‘Overstake’ Rebuild at Busan

Cappu Films Taps Generative AI for ‘Overstake’ Rebuild at Busan

Hong Kong-based sales agency Cappu Films has secured worldwide rights to “Overstake,” a science fiction action thriller helmed by writer-director Stas Mareev. The production distinguishes itself by combining traditional live-action footage with environments reconstructed through generative artificial intelligence.

The project is currently being pitched to international buyers during the Asian Contents & Film Market at the Busan International Film Festival. While AI reconstruction remains an ongoing process, attendees will view a promotional package alongside select completed sequences.

Mareev described the approach as an opportunity to revisit a previously shot film and expand its scope beyond earlier limitations. He emphasized that the narrative and performances remain central, with AI serving to reimagine the visual language and settings while preserving the story’s human elements.

The plot follows an injured veteran who enters a high-stakes betting contest with a two-hour deadline. He must traverse a hostile industrial metropolis while protecting his ex-wife from pursuers, all while a global audience places wagers on their survival through mobile devices. The narrative transforms their struggle into a televised spectacle orchestrated by unknown organizers.

The ensemble cast features Konstantin Adaev, Vika Tokareva, Oleg Chernov, Konstantin Sidikhin, Denis Starkov, and Sergey Russkin.

Janice Woo of Cappu Films noted that sci-fi and action titles are core strengths for the agency. She expressed confidence in the project’s promotional material and looked forward to presenting it to distribution partners in Busan.

Beyond “Overstake,” Cappu’s Busan roster includes the martial arts film “Lion Fist,” the WWII spy series “Operation Doolittle,” the Tribeca-selected “Ephemera,” and the action comedy “Zombie Plane,” which stars Vanilla Ice, Sophie Monk, and Chuck Norris.

  1. AI-assisted production seems inevitable now. I wonder if traditional art departments will feel threatened or just adapt to new tools?

  2. Wait, Vanilla Ice is in ‘Zombie Plane’? Okay, now I have to see that. The Busan lineup is definitely getting wilder.

  3. I’m curious about how they handle consistency when rebuilding industrial settings. That’s usually the hardest part of AI workflows.

  4. Interesting concept with the betting angle. Does the AI integration actually enhance immersion or just look like a video game cutscene?

  5. Generative AI for backgrounds? Sounds like a cost-cutting measure, not an artistic choice. Hope the story holds up.
