Founder of Delhi’s ‘Cockroach’ Protest Movement Released Ahead of Second Day of Demonstrations

Authorities in Delhi are preparing for a second day of demonstrations led by young activists demanding the resignation of India’s election chief, following a day of unrest that saw more than 2,000 individuals detained. The crackdown has drawn sharp criticism toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling government.

In a development that may influence the tone of the upcoming rallies, a court ordered the release of Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), along with two other senior leaders on Sunday. Dipke and his colleagues had been taken into custody on Saturday upon landing in Delhi, just as the movement was mobilizing thousands of supporters for a gathering at Jantar Mantar, a prominent protest site in central Delhi.

The detention of the protest organizers did not halt plans for the weekend’s events, but their release comes as the capital braces for continued civil unrest. The Cockroach Janta Party, known for its satirical yet pointed political commentary, has positioned itself as a voice for youth discontent, particularly regarding electoral integrity and governance issues.
