SpaceX CEO Elon Musk Targets 2027 Launch for Orbital Data Centers Amid Industry Skepticism

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has set an aggressive timeline to launch data centers into orbit by late 2027, positioning the concept as a potential solution for the surging energy demands of the artificial intelligence industry. However, financial analysts and industry consultants caution that significant commercial scaling is more likely to occur throughout the 2030s due to substantial engineering and logistical hurdles.

“It’s a next-decade event,” said Evelyn Chow, a portfolio manager at Neuberger, who told CNBC’s Squawk Box Asia that widespread adoption will require a massive buildout of satellite connectivity over the next four to five years before true scale is achievable. While Chow views the timeline as distant, other experts note that SpaceX has a history of defying industry expectations, such as its rapid deployment of the Starlink satellite constellation.

Blaine Curcio, founder of Orbital Gateway Consulting, acknowledged that the 2030s timeline is a “fair assessment,” but pointed out that skepticism toward SpaceX’s capabilities in the late 2010s proved unfounded when the company successfully launched thousands of satellites ahead of schedule.

Despite the ambitious goals, several critical obstacles remain. The primary technical challenge involves cooling systems. Unlike terrestrial facilities that utilize liquid cooling, orbital infrastructure must manage heat in a vacuum while withstanding high levels of radiation, a combination that requires entirely new thermal management technologies.

Another concern is the rapid pace of hardware evolution. Curcio warned that because GPUs are advancing so quickly, investing heavily in state-of-the-art computing hardware for space could result in immediate obsolescence within just a few years of launch.

Data transmission back to Earth also presents a significant bottleneck. Rohit Jha, CEO and co-founder of Transcelestial, a firm specializing in laser-based communications, emphasized that without robust high-volume data transfer capabilities, orbital data centers would be ineffective. “Anyone can build data centers, but if you can’t talk to these AI systems, then those data centers are useless,” Jha said.

Finally, powering hyperscale operations in orbit remains a distant prospect, likely requiring another five to seven years of development and potentially relying on nuclear power sources. While Musk’s vision accelerates the conversation around space-based infrastructure, experts agree that turning orbital data centers into a practical reality will demand years of iterative testing and investment.
