A man has died following an attack by a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in northern England after he entered the animal’s enclosure, police confirmed. South Yorkshire Police reported that officers and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the site near Doncaster at approximately 1:35 pm on Saturday following reports of the intrusion.
Authorities stated that the man died at the scene. While it remains unclear how he gained access to the restricted area, police emphasized that the tiger sustained no injuries and remained within its enclosure throughout the incident, posing no further risk to the public.
The wildlife park was subsequently evacuated, and law enforcement officers stayed on-site overnight. A police spokesperson expressed condolences to the victim’s family, noting that specialist officers are providing support during this distressing time.
Officials also addressed footage circulating on social media platforms that appeared to capture the man inside the enclosure moments before the attack. Police urged the public not to share or view the video, describing it as highly distressing.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park issued a statement confirming the facility would remain closed through Sunday while they collaborated with authorities to investigate the circumstances. “The safety and wellbeing of our visitors, staff and animals remain our highest priority,” the park said.
The park, which opened in 2009, features the Land of the Tigers attraction, launched in 2011. The habitat is a purpose-built 0.4-hectare reserve for endangered Amur, or Siberian, tigers. Visitors typically observe the animals from a 300-metre raised walkway that winds through woodland and grassland areas, near a waterfall pool where the tigers play.
Makes you wonder how strict the barriers really are. Zoo safety protocols must be under intense scrutiny now.
Please stop sharing those videos. It is disrespectful to the victim and their loved ones.
How does someone even get into such a high-security enclosure? The investigation needs to be thorough.
So tragic. It is heartbreaking to think of the family going through this right now.
