Five members of the same family were shot and killed in a residence in Douglas, Georgia, on Friday, authorities said. The incident is being investigated as an apparent murder-suicide.
Douglas Police Chief Brannen Pruette confirmed that officers responded to reports of an active shooter later in the day. Upon arrival, they discovered four deceased adults inside the home. A fifth victim was transported to a local hospital, where officials later pronounced them dead.
Investigators revealed that one of the victims made the initial emergency call. Hours before the fatal shooting, a female victim had contacted police to report that her husband was “killing her” with his smoking. Emergency medical services transported that woman to a local medical center prior to the deadly incident.
Details regarding the specific sequence of events and the identity of the shooter remain unclear as the investigation continues. Police are withholding additional information to protect the integrity of the ongoing probe.
Charlie Davis, the Douglas city manager, noted that this marks the second murder-suicide in the area in three months. He emphasized the seriousness of domestic violence, stating, “Domestic violence doesn’t know race. It doesn’t know religion. It doesn’t know geographic location.”
Officials urged the public to respect the privacy of the grieving family and to refrain from speculation. “We recognize the profound impact this loss has on those closest to the victims in our community. We ask everyone to respect the privacy of the family and allow them the time and space they need to grieve,” Pruette said.
