Nuclear War and AI Misuse Among 17 Existential Risks to Humanity by 2100, Study Finds

A newly established commission has identified 17 catastrophic threats that could jeopardize human existence before the end of the century. According to a global risk assessment, the most severe dangers include nuclear conflict and the intentional misuse of artificial intelligence.

Published under the auspices of The Lancet, the report outlines these perils alongside other critical challenges such as reduced foreign aid from wealthy nations, the ongoing climate crisis, and widespread childhood malnutrition. Together, these factors pose a significant risk to human health and survival over the next 75 years.

Despite the grim outlook, the assessment emphasizes that viable pathways to address each threat remain within reach. The commission argues that while the scenarios leading to extinction are realistic, humanity still possesses the means to mitigate these dangers through coordinated global action.
