Nine people have died following a mass shooting in a residential neighborhood of Erie, Pennsylvania, authorities confirmed on Saturday. Among the victims are two children, and the suspected shooter was also found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Erie police responded to reports around 5 p.m. Friday on Perry Street after witnesses observed a man firing a weapon before entering a home. Upon arrival, officers discovered two women dead in the street and additional victims inside the residence. Law enforcement stated that all fatalities occurred prior to their arrival and that no further shots were fired during the response. Sounds heard by responders were attributed to tactical flash-bangs rather than gunfire.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah expressed the severity of the event, stating, “There are no words that can adequately express the magnitude of the loss of life here.” He declined to release specific details regarding the scene or speculate on a motive, emphasizing that investigators are working to establish the full circumstances while respecting the privacy of the victims and their families.
The City of Erie government and Mayor Daria Devlin issued a joint statement confirming that the situation has been contained and reiterating that there is no longer a threat to the public. The statement noted the deep sorrow felt by residents and offered thoughts to those impacted by the tragedy near 7th and Perry Streets.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro also released a statement Saturday morning, announcing that he had spoken with Mayor Devlin and offered his administration’s full support. “My heart breaks for this family. Lori and I are praying for their loved ones and the entire Erie community,” Shapiro said.
Officials announced that a press conference would be held Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. to provide further updates on the investigation. The event was made available for live viewing on KDKA-TV’s YouTube channel and the CBS News Pittsburgh streaming service.

It is terrifying that this happened in a residential neighborhood. I hope the community heals from this soon.
Another senseless tragedy. The gun violence in the US continues to be a devastating problem we can’t ignore.
Wait, did the article say how many total people were hurt besides the nine who died?
I can’t believe two children were victims. This is absolutely heartbreaking for the Erie community.
