Android Auto Bug Blocks Outgoing Calls on Closed Foldable Phones

Owners of foldable smartphones are encountering a frustrating technical glitch with Android Auto that prevents them from making outgoing calls when their devices are folded shut. Reports across Reddit, Google Support forums, and Motorola community boards indicate that while incoming calls function normally, the system often fails to connect outbound calls unless the phone is unfolded. Some users have even received on-screen prompts instructing them to “flip open to continue” before proceeding with a call.

Although the exact root cause remains unconfirmed, user observations point toward Google’s Gemini AI assistant as a potential culprit. Several reports note that the calling problems only emerged after users began utilizing Gemini. In one instance from three months ago, a user resolved the issue by switching back to Google Assistant, which restored the ability to place calls while the device was closed.

The affected devices primarily include Motorola Razr Ultra models, specifically the Razr 60 and 70, running Android 16. However, issues have also been documented on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7. Android 16, which began rolling out in June 2025, introduced features such as live notification updates, camera enhancements, and scam detection tools.

Resolving the bug via Google Assistant is no longer a viable option for most users. Google officially discontinued the Assistant service for phones, tablets, and other devices starting September 4, 2026, initially targeting hardware that meets the minimum requirements for the AI service. Consequently, both Google and Motorola are currently investigating the incident, with representatives actively gathering details from affected consumers.

As of now, no official fix has been released. The only known workaround is to place calls while the foldable phone remains open. This incident highlights the growing friction in integrating AI tools like Gemini into core automotive functions, as some consumers continue to express skepticism about relying on AI-driven features in critical everyday applications.

  1. Why are we letting AI handle basic car functions when it can’t even tell if the screen is closed? Make it stop.

  2. Is anyone else getting the flip open prompt? Seems like every Razr user I know is hitting this wall right now.

  3. I switched to Gemini hoping for better voice commands, but this call bug is a dealbreaker. Hope they fix it soon.
