Verstappen Claims Singapore Pole as McLaren Chaos Undermines Championship Hopes

Max Verstappen has seized the initiative at the Formula 1 season’s closing stages, taking pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix following his sprint race victory earlier in the day. The Dutch driver, now riding a wave of momentum after his first win of the campaign at Bahrain and a strong recent form with Red Bull, sees an opportunity to secure back-to-back wins on Sunday.

Verstappen will start ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, both of whom felt they were on the cusp of matching his pace. However, the Red Bull driver acknowledged ongoing concerns regarding his team’s start procedures, having lost the lead off the grid in both the Malaysian sprint and the feature race. Given Singapore’s reputation for difficult overtaking, a poor start could prove costly.

Despite the strong qualifying result, Verstappen remains grounded regarding the constructors’ and drivers’ championships. He trails Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli by 129 points with only 175 available across the remaining races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi—a deficit deemed too large to overcome realistically. Nevertheless, his car’s improved predictability has made him a consistent front-runner.

Meanwhile, McLaren’s fortunes took a sharp downturn during the sprint. Teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were running fourth and fifth when Norris attempted a late dive down the inside of Piastri at Turn Five. The maneuver resulted in a collision that sent Piastri into the barriers and dropped Norris to eighth, reducing their collective points haul from nine to just one. Stewards ruled both drivers equally responsible.

Norris, who argued he had the right of way, accepted responsibility for the attack, while Piastri stated he had attempted to leave room. The incident drew sharp criticism from McLaren team principal Andrea Stella, who called the collision “unacceptable” and emphasized that team interests must always supersede individual ambitions. This marks another high-profile clash between the two teammates, reigniting concerns about crew cohesion as McLaren sits third in the constructors’ championship, merely 11 points behind Red Bull.
