Pope Leo XIV Condemns Death Penalty as U.S. Plans Livestreamed Execution

Pope Leo XIV denounced capital punishment as “inadmissible” on Saturday, marking the World Day Against the Death Penalty. His statement came as the Pentagon moves forward with plans to broadcast the December execution of former Army Maj. Nidal Hasan in Texas.

Writing on social media, the pontiff asserted that the death penalty constitutes an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the human person.

  1. Does the Pope’s moral authority actually carry weight with secular governments anymore? Seems like yelling into the void.

  2. Livestreaming an execution sounds like sensationalism, not justice. Why does the Pentagon feel the need for such theatrics?
