Welsh snooker player Jak Jones captured the British Open title on Saturday, defeating four-time world champion Mark Selby with a decisive 10-6 victory in the final.
The match remained tightly contested through the afternoon session, with the score tied at 4-4. Selby responded with a break of 139, and later produced another century to level the contest at 5-5.
Jones, who had previously overcome Judd Trump in the semi-finals, then seized control of the frame. He extended his advantage to 7-5 before compiling breaks of 53 and 62 to bring himself within one frame of glory.
The Welshman sealed the win after Selby missed a green ball during the colors phase.
Speaking to Channel 5 following the triumph, Jones expressed his disbelief at the result. “I can’t believe it to be honest,” he said. “I never thought I’d be able to grind Mark Selby down but I’ve done it today.”
This victory marks the second ranking title of Jones’ career, coming shortly after his win at the 2026 Championship League in July. The 16-year professional has faced significant hurdles throughout his career, having dropped off the World Snooker Tour twice before establishing himself as a mainstay in 2016.
Jones also reached the final of the 2024 World Championship but was defeated by Kyren Wilson. Reflecting on his journey, he added: “It’s been difficult for the last 15 years – I’ve been battling away. For my parents, wife and son, it’s unbelievable because I haven’t really achieved a lot in the game. This season, to start winning things just feels amazing.”
