‘Ragebait’ named 2026 German Youth Word of the Year

The term ‘ragebait’ has been officially designated as the German Youth Word of the Year for 2026. The announcement was made on Saturday at the Frankfurt Book Fair by publisher PONS Langenscheidt, continuing an annual tradition that tracks the evolution of slang among young people in Germany.

Already recognized as the 2025 Oxford Word of the Year in English, the concept has found significant traction in German internet culture. The word describes content created deliberately to provoke anger, frustration, or moral outrage within social media audiences.

According to the selection jury, the term captures a critical dynamic of modern digital platforms. Content designed to incite strong emotional reactions—such as heated comment sections or widespread sharing driven by indignation—generates high engagement. Algorithms on major platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and X prioritize this high-energy interaction, thereby pushing the provocative material to a wider audience.

This selection follows a series of recent winners that highlight the influence of English on German youth vernacular. The 2025 winner, ‘Das crazy,’ serves as a versatile catch-all response. In 2024, ‘aura’ was chosen to describe fluctuations in personal charisma, while 2023 saw ‘goofy’ selected to describe eccentric behavior in an affectionate manner.

Past recipients include ‘smash’ (2022), ‘cringe’ (2021), and ‘lost’ (2020). The award, known as ‘Jugendwort des Jahres,’ provides linguists and publishers with insight into the changing priorities and communication styles of the country’s younger generation.

  1. I’m just amazed this made it into German youth slang so quickly. Algorithms are definitely shaping how we speak these days.

  2. Finally, a word that accurately describes my entire feed. It’s exhausting but undeniably accurate for how the internet works now.
