Two Philadelphia Officers Shot, Suspect Apprehended in West Philadelphia

Two Philadelphia police officers are undergoing surgery after being shot multiple times during a late-night response in West Philadelphia. The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on the 100 block of North 52nd Street on Saturday, according to city officials.

Police had received reports of an armed man on the porch of a residence. When officers arrived and approached the scene, they were met with heavy gunfire, said Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel. Both officers were urgently transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. As of Saturday morning, authorities had not released updates regarding their conditions.

Bethel provided personal details about the injured officers, identifying one as a 40-year-old father of two and the other as a 33-year-old father of five who sustained 12 gunshot wounds.

After the initial exchange of fire, additional units arrived to surround the area. The suspect continued to shoot at responding officers before police located him in a tree and took him into custody. Law enforcement recovered three weapons from the scene: two handguns and a shotgun. Commissioner Bethel confirmed that one of the handguns was originally taken from one of the officers during the attack.

Mayor Cherelle Parker addressed the shooting, highlighting the inherent risks faced by law enforcement and calling on the public to support the officers’ recovery.

“I want to be very clear, I am grateful for their service and the reason is because for nights like tonight,” Parker said. “We think of them as law enforcement officers, but I see mothers and fathers sons and daughters, brothers and sisters.”

Investigations into the motives behind the shooting are ongoing.
