Police kill suspect after he holds 13 kindergarteners hostage in Brazil

Brazilian authorities have rescued 13 young students from a kindergarten in the southern city of Curitiba after a man seized the children and threatened to ignite the building. Police special forces neutralized the suspect during a tactical intervention, ending a crisis that lasted approximately three hours.

According to Parana state police spokesperson Leticia Martins, the man scaled the fence of the facility on Friday, breached a classroom, and held the children hostage. He had spread a flammable liquid across the room and brandished a lighter. While he initially appeared to possess a firearm, officers later determined the weapon was a replica. He was also carrying a knife.

“Our negotiating teams were in place but saw no alternative but to neutralize him,” Martins said. She declined to disclose whether the attacker had stated a specific motive for the attack.

Parana’s military police commander, Alexandre Lopes Dias, revealed that the suspect suffered from schizophrenia but withheld his identity and details regarding the cause of death. During the standoff, the man remained surrounded by the children, with at least one sitting on his lap.

Tensions escalated as negotiations dragged on. Lopes Dias reported that the children became increasingly agitated, prompting the attacker to physically strike them. “Once we realized that the kids were becoming increasingly upset and that the attacker started assaulting them physically, we opted for a tactical intervention to avoid a greater problem,” he explained.

One child sustained injuries during the incident. The commander noted that the specific nature of the wound was not immediately clarified.

Local media captured footage of distressed parents gathering outside the school in the Sao Braz neighborhood while police debated their next move. Minutes after reports of flash-bang devices being deployed, officers emerged carrying the children to safety. Lopes Dias described the entry into the classroom as highly tactical and designed to minimize risk to the students.

Curitiba Mayor Eduardo Pimentel confirmed the outcome on Instagram, writing, “The 13 children are alive and safe! After anguishing and tense moments, this is the news we were all waiting for.”

The event marks another violent incident against educational institutions in Brazil. In April 2023, a man attacked a daycare in Blumenau, also in southern Brazil, killing four children with an axe.

City officials in Curitiba announced that both the rescued children and school staff would receive psychological support following the traumatic event.

  1. Schizophrenia and such violence… mental health support is clearly lacking. Sad outcome for everyone except the children.

  2. I wonder if the police waited too long before intervening? The commander said they had no choice, but still stressful.

  3. Another attack on a school? This violence against children in Brazil is simply unacceptable and heartbreaking.
