Ring Unveils Smart Lock with Manual Power Dial to Prevent Lockouts

Amazon-owned security brand Ring has officially announced its debut smart lock, introducing a unique manual power dial designed to eliminate the risk of being locked out due to a dead battery. The device, unveiled on October 10, 2026, addresses a common vulnerability in smart home hardware by providing a mechanical energy backup.

According to the company, the lock offers four distinct methods for entry: a fingerprint scanner, a numeric keypad, the Ring mobile application, and Alexa voice commands. If the internal battery depletes, users can rotate the external power dial to generate enough electricity to activate the electronic components, allowing them to input a PIN or scan their fingerprint to gain access.

Once inside, the lock’s Quick Release Ultra battery pack can be removed and recharged at home, removing the need for disposable batteries. The device is fully integrated into the Ring and Amazon Alexa ecosystems, enabling users to manage the lock alongside other compatible smart home devices through a single interface.

While competitors often rely on temporary 9-volt battery contacts or USB-C portable chargers for emergencies, Ring’s approach aims to provide a more immediate solution. Proponents suggest this mechanism is particularly beneficial for families, such as children returning from school, who might otherwise be stranded if the lock fails.

Details regarding battery longevity, Matter compatibility, and specific third-party integrations have not yet been disclosed. Additionally, the exact amount of rotation required to charge the lock remains unspecified, with testing expected upon release. The Ring Smart Lock is scheduled to launch in early 2027.

  1. I need to know exactly how many rotations equal one entry. If it takes five minutes of cranking, I’m sticking with my spare key under the mat.

  2. A hand-cranked dial for smart locks is actually a clever solution. Finally, no more panic when the battery dies before you can reach the house.
