Hurricane Isaias Weakens to Post-Tropical Storm After Hitting US Gulf Coast

Hurricane Isaias struck the United States Gulf Coast on Friday before degrading into a post-tropical system as it tracked inland over southern Alabama. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that on Saturday, the storm was located approximately 89km (55 miles) south-southwest of Montgomery, carrying maximum sustained winds of 100km/h (65mph). The system continues to pose risks of flash flooding and strong winds further from the coast.

Upon making landfall near Destin, Florida, Isaias was classified as the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, with peak sustained winds reaching 169km/h (105mph). The impact was immediate, with flooded roadways in Destin and police urging residents in nearby Pensacola to avoid travel due to debris. Social media feeds from the region displayed downed trees, severed power lines, and footage of a roof being torn from a Pensacola inn.

Dangerous conditions forced several Panhandle counties to temporarily suspend emergency response operations on Friday evening. In Alabama, Mobile officials reported similar structural damage, and roads in Houston County were closed. As of early Saturday, more than 664,000 customers across Florida and Alabama remained without electricity, according to poweroutage.com.

The NHC highlighted a storm surge ranging from 0.91 to 1.52 metres (3-5ft) as a critical threat along the coastline stretching from Dauphin Island, Alabama, to Florida’s Aucilla River. Transportation disruptions included the grounding of most flights on Friday at several airports, including all operations at the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport.

President Donald Trump stated he is closely monitoring the situation from outside the White House, describing the hurricane as “under control.” In response, Florida deployed approximately 5,000 National Guard personnel for search-and-rescue missions, and some prisons evacuated inmates. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed that emergency declarations have been approved for both Florida and Alabama to facilitate federal resource deployment.

Meanwhile, meteorologists are tracking two other systems. Tropical Storm Rachel is expected to deliver heavy rain and wind to northern Mexico and Southern California over the weekend. Simultaneously, Hurricane Simon has intensified into a Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 225km/h (140mph) as it approaches the Mexican coast. The NHC warns that Simon could unleash life-threatening flooding and mudslides, particularly in the southwestern regions of Jalisco, Michoacan, Colima, and Nayarit.
