Delhi Sealed as Tens of Thousands Deployed Ahead of ‘Cockroach’ Protest

Pieces of the Indian capital have been heavily fortified with tens of thousands of security personnel as Delhi prepares for a significant demonstration by the Gen Z-led “cockroach” movement on Saturday. The protesters are demanding electoral reforms and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that he is manipulating voter rolls. The Election Commission has denied these claims, and Kumar has not yet responded to the resignation demand.

Authorities have denied permission for the gathering and erected massive metal barricades along all routes leading to Jantar Mantar, the designated protest site. The heavy security presence has caused severe disruption across central Delhi, with traffic diversions turning short commutes into hour-long journeys. Police and paramilitary forces have stopped and questioned early arrivals at the venue, while loudspeakers broadcast requests for public cooperation.

In a statement on X, the Delhi Police justified the restrictions as necessary measures to ensure public safety and prevent overcrowding, noting that Jantar Mantar can only accommodate 1,000 people at a time. Additionally, several trains into Delhi were cancelled, and dozens of metro stations were ordered closed to hinder the assembly of demonstrators.

Despite the crackdown, Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), declared that the group would proceed with its march to Jantar Mantar regardless of the consequences. “If you want to jail us or even shoot us we are prepared,” Dipke posted on X, directly addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The CJP previously scored a notable victory in July when its summer protests over education reforms forced the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The upcoming rally is expected to be one of the largest in recent history, backed by various opposition parties, farmer organizations, and student groups. CJP leaders have accused authorities of obstructing supporters from reaching the capital. During a press conference, Delhi Police official Nupur Prasad cited the short notice provided by the CJP—violating a 10-day application rule—and past non-compliance with legal directions as reasons for denying the permit.

The controversy centers on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which began last year. While the Election Commission states the initiative aims to remove duplicate and ineligible entries, having already struck off 130 million names, critics argue the process targets eligible voters to benefit the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Both the BJP and the Election Commission reject accusations of political manipulation.

Tensions have escalated sharply in recent days, with police breaking up protests led by opposition figure Rahul Gandhi and other MPs in Delhi. Viral videos showed officers physically forcing Gandhi onto a bus and preventing him from exiting through the window, highlighting the intensifying standoff between the opposition and electoral authorities.

  1. 130 million names removed? That statistic sounds alarming without context. We need independent verification, not just claims from either side.

  2. I live near Jantar Mantar. The traffic chaos is already unbearable before the protest even starts. Just let people assemble peacefully!

  3. Canceling trains and closing metro stations seems excessive. Surely there are better ways to manage crowds than paralyzing the capital entirely.

  4. Gen Z really shook things up last month. Hope this protest has the same impact on the Election Commission’s policies.

  5. The sheer scale of the security deployment is staggering. I wonder if barricading Jantar Mantar actually solves anything or just fuels more anger.
