A Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft operating for Amazon crashed upon landing at Miami International Airport on Friday afternoon, overrunning the runway and igniting a fire that struck multiple vehicles. The incident has severely disrupted operations at one of the United States’ busiest aviation hubs.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the plane, arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, overshot the runway at approximately 2pm ET (1800 GMT). Video footage circulating on social media showed thick black smoke rising from the scene near the airfield.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported that the aircraft veered off the tarmac, crossed a nearby road, and collided with several vehicles before catching fire. Officials are currently working to extinguish the blaze and are assessing the condition of those involved. It remains unclear how many crew members were on board, and no information regarding injuries or fatalities has been released.
An Amazon spokesperson stated that the flight was operated by 21 Air and described the event as an “incident” during the landing attempt. “We’re working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened,” said Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel. “Right now, our absolute priority is the safety, wellbeing, and care of everyone involved. We’re doing everything we can to support those affected.”
US Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that a full ground stop had been issued at Miami International Airport following the crash. Travelers were urged to expect significant delays as the airport manages the disruption.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed it is aware of the accident and will provide further updates as the investigation progresses. The FAA has launched its own inquiry into the cause of the incident, which is currently unknown.
