Tech Giants Remain Silent on Potential US Government Execution Livestream

YouTube, Twitch, Meta, and X have declined to clarify whether they would permit the US government to broadcast an execution on their services. None of the four companies responded to requests for comment following reports that an unnamed Pentagon official stated the death sentence of Nidal Hasan would be televised live.

Hasan was convicted in connection with the 2009 mass shooting at a Texas military installation. The uncertainty has raised questions about how major social media platforms will handle such explicit government-sanctioned content.

While several giants remained quiet, two other platforms offered some clarity. A spokesperson for TikTok’s US operations directed inquiries to the company’s community guidelines, which explicitly prohibit “shocking and graphic content,” including footage capturing the moment of a person’s death. Similarly, Kick, a streaming service known for its more permissive moderation approach, was also contacted regarding the potential broadcast.
