Why Mailing a Ballot Close to Election Day Risks Rejection for Late Postmark

Voters relying on the U.S. Postal Service to return mail-in ballots shortly before Election Day face a heightened risk of having their votes rejected due to delayed postmarks. In response, election officials are urging citizens to deliver their ballots directly to local election offices or designated drop boxes instead of using standard mailboxes.

This caution stems from operational shifts initiated by the USPS beginning in April 2025. Under the agency’s “Regional Transportation Optimization” initiative, which is part of a broader decade-long restructuring plan launched in 2021 to address financial challenges, certain post offices—particularly in rural areas—have reduced the frequency of daily mail pickups and altered processing methods.

Consequently, envelopes dropped into collection boxes or handed to letter carriers may not receive an official date stamp on the same day they are collected. Because many states utilize the postmark date to verify whether a ballot was sent by Election Day, these processing delays can result in otherwise valid votes being disqualified.

The issue arises as public confidence in the Postal Service’s ability to deliver election mail promptly has declined. These concerns follow a legal challenge in which President Trump attempted to impose restrictions on mail-in voting for the upcoming midterm elections, a move that was ultimately blocked by the Supreme Court.

To mitigate these risks, USPS has announced special postmarking procedures at affected locations under its “extraordinary measures” policy, scheduled to begin approximately a week before the election. Despite these preparations, the agency continues to advise voters to mail their ballots at least one week prior to state deadlines. For those living in states with grace periods for late arrivals, USPS recommends visiting a post office in person to request a manual postmark, ensuring the envelope is dated on the day it is mailed.
