SpaceX Targets Major Mobile Carrier Status via Low-Band Spectrum Deal

SpaceX has announced ambitions to evolve beyond its current role as a satellite internet provider, targeting the status of a major mobile carrier through the acquisition of Grain Management’s nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio. The deal, which involves up to 14 megahertz of paired low-band spectrum, is currently awaiting approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

According to SpaceX, securing this low-band spectrum addresses a critical technical barrier for expanding Starlink Mobile within the United States. While the company previously purchased spectrum licenses from EchoStar for commercial wireless services, this specific low-band acquisition is designed to enhance signal penetration through walls and other physical obstacles, enabling reliable indoor service.

The strategic move positions SpaceX to offer a viable alternative to established carriers. Because the majority of existing mobile devices already support the 800 MHz band, SpaceX can potentially reach millions of customers without requiring hardware modifications. The company notes that Starlink Mobile will be the first network operator to deploy both satellite and terrestrial spectrum simultaneously.

In conjunction with this spectrum purchase, SpaceX highlighted recent FCC authorization to launch 15,000 Gen2 Starlink Mobile satellites optimized for the 2 GHz spectrum. The company states these next-generation satellites will deliver more than 100 times the bandwidth of the current fleet, facilitating high-speed internet access in remote regions while the low-band spectrum supports robust terrestrial coverage.
