German firm Isar Aerospace has successfully put Europe’s first fully commercial orbital rocket into space, a significant milestone that overcomes a major hurdle for the region’s growing space sector.
The successful mission saw the company’s two-stage Spectrum rocket reach low Earth orbit from a launch site in Norway. This achievement comes nearly a year after the company’s initial attempt in March, which ended in failure when the vehicle crashed into the sea and exploded just 30 seconds into flight.
Daniel Metzler, CEO and co-founder of Isar Aerospace, emphasized the broader implications of the launch in a press release. “Today, Isar Aerospace opened space from Continental Europe,” Metzler stated. “Launch continues to be the largest bottleneck for the global space industry, and from today on, there is a true alternative for commercial and institutional customers.”
The successful launch positions Isar Aerospace as a new provider for both commercial and government clients seeking access to orbit from European soil, potentially reducing reliance on launches from other continents.
