Sydney Festival is set to present a landmark dance program in January 2027, marking the southern hemisphere debut of the Dance Reflections series. The lineup will introduce 11 international choreographic works to Australian audiences for the first time, originating from countries including France, Belgium, and South Africa.
According to organizers, the festival aims to describe the initiative as a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity due to the sheer scale of the production. The dance component is projected to be three times larger than the offerings at the previous Sydney Festival, bringing a total of 174 performers and crew members to the city.
The centerpiece of the program is the acclaimed French choreographer Rachid Ouramdane’s piece, Outsider. Premiering in 2024, the work features 21 dancers from the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève alongside four elite athletes. The performance involves navigating a complex web of high wires and slack lines, set to the minimalist compositions of avant-garde composer Julius Eastman.
Other highlights in the Dance Reflections roster include collaborations associated with global music superstars such as Rosalía, Madonna, and Beyoncé. The festival also plans to feature a high-wire takeover at the Cutaway venue.
174 performers is a lot of people to manage. I wonder if ticket prices will reflect that huge production scale.
Finally bringing Dance Reflections to the southern hemisphere. It is about time we got this level of international choreography.
Wait, are those Rosalía and Beyoncé collaborations really part of the official Dance Reflections lineup? Need more details!
Three times the usual dance program? That is a massive commitment from the festival organizers this year.
I can’t wait to see Outsider! The concept of elite athletes on high wires sounds absolutely breathtaking.
