Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Xavi Simons has enrolled in an academic program at Harvard University as part of his ongoing rehabilitation from a significant knee injury. The 23-year-old Dutch playmaker, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture in April that sidelined him for the World Cup, announced his acceptance into the institution’s Crossover into Business course.
The specialized online curriculum is designed specifically for professional athletes, aiming to cultivate commercial acumen by pairing participants with Harvard MBA students for mentorship through enterprise management and practical case studies.
Simons recently traveled to the United States to intensify his physical therapy and took the opportunity to visit the campus in Boston. Speaking on LinkedIn, he emphasized that while his primary objective remains returning to football, he is committed to personal and professional growth during his recovery period.
“Football is still my main focus, but I also want to keep learning and improving away from the pitch,” Simons stated. “I want to understand the business side of the game better, learn from people in different industries and keep developing as a person.”
The Crossover into Business initiative has previously hosted high-profile figures from other sports, including Victoria Azarenka, the former world number one tennis player, as well as athletes from the NBA and NFL.
This follows a trend of sports personalities utilizing Harvard’s educational resources. In June, Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga participated in a short course focused on the business of entertainment, media, and sports after missing out on France’s World Cup squad. Additionally, former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson assumed a long-term teaching position at the university in 2014 following his retirement.
Imagine studying business case studies while your knee is in a brace. Focus must be insane.
I love this. It shows players are thinking beyond the pitch. Inspiring for young athletes.
Another athlete chasing an MBA. Does Harvard really have time for this, or is it just a prestige badge?
Wait, is Xavi Simons already at Tottenham? I thought he was still at Leipzig. Confused!
Simons is serious about life after football. Smart move using injury time productively.
