Trump Honors Tech Titans Musk, Brin, and Nadella with National Science Medals

President Donald Trump presented the United States’ highest distinctions in science and engineering to leaders from major technology corporations, including SpaceX, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Nvidia. The ceremony on Thursday recognized recipients of the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, received the National Medal of Science alongside Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and AMD CEO Lisa Su. Michael Dell of Dell Technologies and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella were among those honored with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

During the event, Trump credited the inductees for pioneering a “incredible future for America.” He stated, “Because of these people here, we will always be on top. No one else can compete with us,” positioning the group as central to American technological dominance.

The timing of the awards was notable given simultaneous developments in trade and immigration policy. Hours before the ceremony, the Trump administration announced the suspension of Microsoft and other top tech firms from the H-1B visa program, alleging fraudulent practices. Officials stated the suspension was intended to prevent companies from exploiting the system, which allows hiring skilled foreign workers for a path to permanent residency.

Critics have described the event as further evidence of an increasingly symbiotic relationship between the White House and Silicon Valley. Several high-profile executives, including Musk and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, attended Trump’s second inauguration, and companies such as Amazon, Meta, and Nvidia contributed financially to the president’s second term launch.

Five of the six medalists were born outside the United States, and four rank among the ten wealthiest individuals globally according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The National Medal of Science, first awarded in 1963 to aerospace pioneer Theodore von Karman, is selected by a presidential committee based on nominations from the National Science Foundation.

The honorees maintain various political and business connections to the administration. Musk, who served briefly as a special adviser leading the Department of Government Efficiency before a public dispute over fiscal policy, has since reconciled with Trump. The president referred to Musk as “our modern-day Thomas Edison” and an “industrial titan,” highlighting his contributions to aerospace and electric vehicles.

Michael Dell has been a significant financial backer of Trump Accounts, a proposal to establish government-sponsored investment accounts for children born during Trump’s second term, committing $6.25 billion alongside his wife. Meanwhile, Nvidia’s Huang recently invested in Intel and is reportedly among donors financing a new White House ballroom. Additionally, the White House secured an agreement in August granting the U.S. government a 15 percent stake in AI chip sales made by Nvidia and AMD to China.

  1. This isn’t a merit award, it’s a payment receipt. The timing with the H-1B suspension makes the whole ceremony feel transactional.

  2. Five of six winners were born abroad. Seems ironic to honor immigrants while suspending the very visa program they relied on.
