AMD is moving forward with plans to support its FSR 4 upscaling technology on handheld gaming devices by the close of 2026. While the technology is already technically capable of enhancing frame rates on older hardware like the Steam Deck, the company initially left the door open in June to withhold official support for legacy devices.
Jack Huynh, AMD’s head of consumer chips, has now clarified that the company intends to expand its machine learning-driven FSR 4 suite to the handheld market. This commitment comes alongside revelations that AMD is developing a new processor explicitly designed to support FSR 4 capabilities.
Details regarding hardware compatibility remain unclear. It is not yet known whether existing handhelds will receive the update or if consumers must purchase new devices to access the technology. Huynh highlighted the AI-based nature of the expansion but did not provide a complete list of supported systems in the initial remarks.
So essentially, buy the new chip if you want full support. Classic move, honestly.
AMD has danced around this long enough. Let’s see actual performance numbers before I get excited.
Does this mean I can run FSR 4 on my Steam Deck without buying a new handheld? That would be huge!
