The United Nations’ highest-ranking official in Nepal has issued an urgent and emotional call for international assistance, warning that the catastrophic Himalayan flooding last month has upended lives in mere moments. Lila Pieters Yahia, the UN Resident Coordinator, stated that communities near the China-Nepal border are grappling with the sheer magnitude of the destruction following torrential rains on August 26 that swept through mountainous regions.
The deluge destroyed critical infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and hydropower dams. “You lose your home, you lose your livelihood, you lose your loved one and you lose the breadwinner of your family,” Pieters Yahia told AFP from Kathmandu. “And you know, this happened in one to two minutes.”
Official figures indicate that at least 1,384 people have perished, with more than 5,500 still missing across Nepal and China’s Tibet region. The missing list includes over 800 foreigners from at least 34 nations, comprising both tourists and pilgrims.
Many settlements close to the epicenter remain isolated as washed-out roads have turned hour-long journeys into multi-day treks. In response, the UN and the Nepalese government have initiated a $50 million appeal aimed at aiding more than 84,000 displaced individuals.
Pieters Yahia also cautioned against the looming threat of cholera and other communicable diseases, highlighting the loss of 5,000 cattle. She emphasized the need for immediate investment in sanitation, hygiene, and protections for vulnerable women and girls. “My plea to the international community is: this is the time to help Nepal,” she said. “We can’t leave them alone.”
