Rising Costs of Childcare Drive Gen Z Birth Rate Decline, Report Finds

The surging expense of raising a family has become a dominant factor in declining birth rates, according to a recent analysis from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. The cost of bringing up children has climbed approximately 60% over the past eight years, outpacing wage growth and creating significant financial barriers for younger generations.

Researchers found that Gen Z women are “dramatically less likely to want children” compared to members of three preceding generations. This shift is not driven by a single cause but rather a convergence of economic and social pressures.

The report attributes changing preferences among young adults to several key issues, including the high financial burden of parenting, insufficient social support systems, evolving societal norms, and ongoing safety and health concerns regarding childbirth.

As the data suggests, the ongoing decline in birth rates is increasingly being characterized as an affordability crisis. With the cost of family formation rising faster than household incomes, economists warn that economic viability remains a primary obstacle for those considering parenthood.
