Hate Crimes in England and Wales Hit Record Highs, Data Reveals

Racially and religiously motivated crimes in England and Wales have reached unprecedented levels, according to new government figures. The data highlights a significant surge in hostility, with the Home Office reporting 146,825 hate crimes recorded by police in the 12 months leading to March 2026. This represents a 7% increase compared to the previous year.

Among specific groups, offences targeting Muslim communities experienced the steepest climb, rising by 15%. The number of incidents against Muslims increased from 4,479 to 5,132 over the period. Antisemitic hate crimes also saw a substantial jump, growing by 10% to reach 3,162 cases, up from 2,874.

These statistics come as the UK government’s primary partner on Islamophobia warns that attacks on mosques are not only becoming more frequent but are also increasing in severity. The rising figures underscore growing concerns regarding community safety and religious intolerance across the region.
