BMW has officially expanded its Neue Klasse electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of the iX4. As the electric counterpart to the popular X4 compact SUV, the new model retains the signature tall stance and sloping roofline that define the sports activity vehicle segment. This release follows the debut of the iX5, establishing the iX4 as BMW’s third EV built on its latest electric architecture.
The exterior design mirrors the internal combustion engine version but incorporates the brand’s distinct Neue Klasse kidney grille. With short overhangs, aggressive front fascia elements, and a prominent rear spoiler featuring an integrated brake light, the iX4 presents a notably athletic profile. Low-profile taillights further accentuate its sporty aesthetic.
Under the hood, the iX4 is available in two primary configurations for the U.S. market: the iX4 50 xDrive and the iX4 M60 xDrive. European buyers will also have access to an iX4 40 xDrive variant. Both models are equipped with a substantial 112kWh battery pack. The 50 xDrive model boasts an impressive EPA-estimated range of 428 miles and supports rapid charging from 10% to 80% in just 21 minutes, facilitated by an 800-volt electrical architecture. Specific range and charging figures for the M60 variant have not yet been disclosed.
Performance specifications highlight the vehicle’s dual nature as both a long-range cruiser and a performance machine. The iX4 50 xDrive delivers 463 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque, propelling the SUV from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds with an electronically governed top speed of 130 mph. The more potent iX4 M60 xDrive steps up the pace with 603 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 149 mph.
Inside, the cabin features high-tech amenities consistent with BMW’s recent Neue Klasse announcements. Drivers can opt for a 3D heads-up display and a large 17.9-inch central touchscreen paired with a new vertical-spoke steering wheel. Audio duties are handled by a standard seven-speaker, 205-watt system, while the M60 xDrive includes a 13-speaker, 430-watt Harman Kardon setup as standard equipment. The Panoramic iDrive system, which integrates both assisted driving and infotainment, runs on BMW’s Operating System X, based on the Android Open-Source Project.
Pricing for the iX4 50 xDrive is set to start at $67,695 when it arrives in dealerships in March 2027. This positions it approximately $10,000 below the larger iX5 60 eDrive. While official pricing for the iX4 M60 xDrive remains unrevealed, industry estimates suggest it could carry a premium of around $20,000 over the base model, aligning with BMW’s typical surcharges for M-badged vehicles.
$67k feels steep for a compact compared to rivals. Will the M60 version bring it closer to street-legal hypercar territory?
Finally, an electric SUV that doesn’t look like a generic blob! The X4 silhouette translates beautifully to the iX4.
428 miles is impressive, but I wonder how much that drops in real winter conditions. Still, 21-minute charging is a game changer.
