Oliver Farry spoke with Guy Poran, a former officer in the Israeli Air Force and a member of the organization Mistaclim, which translates to “Looking the Occupation in the Eye.” Poran described the October 7 Hamas attacks as a profound fracture in Israeli society, noting the unprecedented nature of the assault on civilians across all age groups.
Poran contended that accountability for the security failures cannot be isolated from the policies implemented before the attacks, specifically pointing to the approach taken by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government toward Hamas. He argued that meaningful reform is essential to addressing these root causes.
According to Poran, without significant political shifts, there is little hope for repairing relations between Israelis and Palestinians or establishing the conditions necessary for a durable peace, which he views as vital to the nation’s future.
