AfD Secures Landslide Victory in Saxony-Anhalt Regional Election

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has achieved a decisive victory in the Saxony-Anhalt regional elections, according to exit polls released on September 6, 2026. The far-right party captured 44.5% of the vote, marking a significant gain and solidifying its position as the strongest political force in the central German state.

The election, held on a Saturday, saw record voter turnout, reflecting heightened political engagement across the region. This result marks the second consecutive state election victory for the AfD in eastern Germany, following a similar win in Thuringia earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) experienced a sharp decline, dropping to approximately 12% of the vote—a loss of nearly half its previous support. The CDU finished in third place with around 16%, while the Greens and The Left also saw their shares shrink compared to prior electoral cycles.

In his first public comments since the poll results emerged, AfD leader Alice Weidel described the outcome as a strong mandate, asserting that voters had chosen a clear direction for the region. She emphasized the party’s focus on local governance and policy implementation in the coming term.
